About us

HYDRO is a multidisciplinary research consortium focused on advancing water purification and sensing technologies. We are addressing critical water challenges impacting human health and national defense through innovative electrochemical solutions. Our team is committed to developing effective technologies for safe water access, food safety, and extreme conditions, ensuring clean water and resource recovery in various environments.

finding solutions in key areas

The six research thrusts of the HYDRO Center impact widely separated domains and distinct populations. Strategically, they share needs for water purification and monitoring that are not addressed by traditional technologies but call for fit-for-purpose solutions. The settings are remote, extreme, resource-limited, mobile, or at-home and are therefore best served by point-of-need (PON) or portable solutions.

10%

Recovery of rare earth elements from acid mine drainage has the potential to satisfy over 10% of U.S. consumption for computing, defense, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing.

25%

There are 2.3 billion people (25% of the global population) living in countries under water stress.

The future of water treatment is not just ‘more treatment’; it is autonomous, sensor-informed, and composition-selective separations that can tune which ions and molecules are removed or retained in response to real-time measurements.
